"The 'Vèt Oranj' Necklace" (The 'Kijani Chungwa' Necklace

"Color is a power which directly influences the soul" - Kazmir Severinovich Malevich

What exactly is it about the rainbow that gives most people a sense of happiness? Sure, it may signify the calm after a passing rainstorm, but the colours themselves have an effect on our minds.

Colour psychology is a well-known, yet less explored branch of the study of how our brain perceives what it visualizes.

There is a reason people prefer certain colours over others. This preference says volumes about our personalities because each colour has an association with a reaction of our brain when we internalize it. Dare I go even deeper in agreement with our quote, I would say colour directly affects our souls.

Colour perception is subjective, and certain colours have a universal significance.

Culturally speaking, colours have different values attached to them. The Maasai in Kenya, for example, associate the bead colours of their jewellery with significant meaning relating to cattle, their main food source, which play an important role in their tradition and lifestyle. These colours mean something very different to them than us here in the Caribbean.

However when we look at art, namely the 'Kijani Chungwa' necklace, we take it in through the colours of the beads we see because they invoke certain emotions. We feel colour. How or what we feel about  it varies from person to person.

True, colour perception also varies from culture to culture. But I'm almost certain that the "Vet Oranj"Necklace or the "Kijani Chungwa"  meaning 'Green Orange' in French Creole and in Swahili , would be considered every bit a regal, breathtaking and one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art in any culture.

I implore you to let it speak to your soul and bathe your life with colour. Let it invoke freshness, harmony and growth in your life. Let it awaken your fascination and bring you happiness and creative stimulation. Like a rainbow.

"The Artist's Necklace"

“A painted surface is a real,

 living form.”

Kazimir Malevich

A quote from the man who developed the Russian abstract art movement, associated with ideas of spiritual purity. He explains that the artist can only be considered an artist when the forms in her picture have nothing in common with nature.

Her ability to construct, not on an aesthetic basis of beauty, but on the basis of weight, speed and the direction of movement.

Forms must be given life and the right to individual existence and only possible when we free all our art from any subject matter and teach our consciousness to see everything in nature not as real forms and objects, but as material masses from which forms must be made, which have nothing in common with nature.

I encourage you to read more about it in the Manifesto; it's a very interesting read and while this may all be controversial, there are a few things I can agree with.

A painted surface, much like our piece of the week is a real living form. Hand-painted and glorious, it makes a statement. It speaks to people. The artwork is fluid and colours, eye-catching. It draws you to it, tells a story and takes on a whole new form and purpose.

Secondly, "forms must be given life" - you can't tell me this necklace isn't doing just that. It's giving me all kinds of life! Its very existence is life-giving! Can I get an Amen?

But seriously, this piece has been given the right to individual existence, created to adorn the neck of a confident Queen, free from copy, impossible to reproduce.

These very same laws, I think can be applied to our lives. I only encourage you to paint your lives with colour and magic, poetry, love and light. Let it come alive and make a statement.

Construct your lives not only on an aesthetic basis of beauty but on the basis of weight, the weight of your love for yourself and everyone in your tribe, the speed of your ability to forgive and the upward direction of movement in all of your endeavours.

"The Artist's Necklace" is a reminder to do just that.

"Coterie" Necklace

The whole universe is based on rhythms. Everything happens in circles, in spirals.

John Hartford

This quote can't be truer. It is true about life, people, poetry and especially  about music.

Let's explore for a brief moment the Circle of fifths. It is a visual representation of the relationship between the keys you hear in music.

A diagram in music theory that helps students memorize and understand the 24 major and minor keys, and it can be quite daunting if you don’t know what you’re looking at.

But the Circle of Fifths, though complex, is as elegant and beautiful as the musical relationships it describes.

Much like this necklace and what it represents.

Patti Davis once said:"You know, if you hang around this earth long enough you really see how things come full circle"

More and more I'm coming to learn that. This week's statement piece, appropriately named Coterie, has me in deep thought about how life and relationships move. The ebb and flow of things.

However you don't have to hang around for a hundred years to see change .To renew and rebuild.

It teaches me that we need to keep moving. Move with the cycles. Change with the seasons, move with the tides , with the currents and not against.

The Universe really does have a rhythm, a constant beat like your heart, grounding you and reminding you that you are alive.

Reminding you that everything is connected, that we are all connected.

"Wanderlust" Necklace

"Wherever You Go Becomes A Part Of You Somehow.” -Anita Desai

I learnt this during my trip to Carifesta this year. I had such an amazing time on this trip and got to experience the island of Trinidad for the first time.

So many colours and sights, so much to see and taste and experience, so much like home yet so very different. I am so inspired by the culture and the fashion, the art! So much art!

The poetry. The people. The people themselves were art. Their melodic accents and ooooh so much  diversity, from long flowing hair and olive skin to gravity defying afros and popping melanin.

It was mesmerizing to watch all who came out to attend the event. The oufits and styles. Their outrageous jewellery! - Of course I would look at their jewellery and all the art and creations of the other artisans I  had the privilege of sharing that magical space with.

Without surprise, this piece was one of the many favourites of everyone there.  It's Afro-Caribbean design and colours, a beacon to all who saw it. Calling out to all who dared to love it. Those brave enough to touch it lovingly and even try it on.

Needless to say it found a home in Trinidad to complete an eclectic and classy style. To adorn her bravery and confidence. I couldn't be happier.

It is indeed true that wherever you go becomes a part of you -  but what happens when you become a part of wherever you go?  I think in this case, that may be the truth.

PIECE OF THE WEEK! August 7, 2019

"Maybe all poets are broken shells and the words they pour are beautiful pearls."

Shyamala Peesapati

Happily, this mishmash of all the wonderful treasures the sea has given us is assembled quite beautifully in this statement piece.

Like a seashell to your ear, I imagine that if you hold this piece up to your heart, the most wonderful things could be heard. This piece is for all the sea lovers - those whose souls belong to the ocean.

This piece of wearable art is inspired by our beloved island and its luscious stretches of white sand beach, a plethora of shells, endless and unique stones, all telling a story, all holding a poem.

Just like us.

"Like seashells we are beautiful and unique each with a story to tell." Unknown

Turquoise & Crimson Stone Necklace

The purest and most thoughtful minds are those which love colour the most.”  ― John Ruskin, The Stones of Venice

Turquoise is a stone of protection, strong and opaque, yet soothing to the touch and healing to the eye - as if carved from an azure heaven and slipped to earth.

As a great lover of turquoise, I can attest to the above description in the most marvellous of ways.

When you are adorned in these stones and colours, you become passion personified. Just looking at them strung together brings calm and contentment.

I love colour. I love the joy and healing they bring and how they can alter your mood and uplift your day. They nurture your soul.

Pieces like these need to be worn boldly and unapologetically, a statement to the world that you are here to stay and blossom.

“Mere colour, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways. ”

― Oscar Wilde

Hand painted beaded necklace

"Paint me perfect poetry."

-  N'Zuri Za Austin

And perfect poetry it is. This piece, like all our pieces, screams authenticity and eclectic style out into the vast universe. Each brush stroke along every bead, a storyline... each string of beads an anthology.

It speaks love, creativity, passion, beauty, and the richness of our ancestral heritage. It whispers loudly of our past, present and our future. May it bring you  self-acceptance, confidence and peace.

You are more than worthy.

"You are the creator. Get out that old box of paints and brushes and start drawing love into your life."

- Kate McGahan

Bespoke Picture Charms

“What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.”

– Karl Lagerfeld

I could not say it better myself. This is why it's so important to document and witness as many moments as you can. We are not certain how many we will have.

Wear each charm as a reminder to always cherish the precious moments and people in your life.

A reminder to live in every moment, hum every tune, feel every feeling, enjoy every raindrop, count every star and every rainbow, and, of course, wear your poem, every day.

"The Lifelong Love Necklace"

This piece, in particular, is very dear to my heart.

It is one of its kind, made from all the odds and ends and loose beads I have collected over the years.

There are moments when I have an idea in my head all day and I need to get it out. And this beauty here was born from one of those moments.

There are so many elements used in this piece; coconut, wood, painted beads, and stone and somehow it all fits together to create something absolutely beautiful.

I think it's a splendid illustration of lifelong love.

All these wonderful moments and slices of time, all these experiences with this other person, and they all come together in a wonderful way, cementing how much that loved one means to you.

This piece is a reminder to be unafraid to love, completely and fully, to collect moments, to love in spite of differences and even circumstances.

Formed in love, from a seeming lifetime's worth of moments, this necklace is like love itself. Enduring.

Mr D'Arcy's Inspiration: Black beaded collar

This Poetry Kisses piece of wearable art has a really weird inspiration story behind it, not unlike most of my pieces.

So it's 1:30 in the morning and I'm trying to sleep. I hear a noise in my studio, only to find my troublesome, volatile, restless cat, Mr D'Arcy - more ghetto gangsta than romantic leading man - trying to climb out my window. As I reach to close the window I clumsily knock over an open container of beads, scattering dozens of these tiny balls all over the studio floor. No fun.

But as I pick up all these tiny beads off the floor, something happens. Inexplicably, unexpectedly I take some string and start weaving. It isn't what I'm doing or even plan to do at the time. I just sit there... and I string one bead to the other.

The result: the happy accident in black before you. Bed by 2:30 a.m.

Mr D'Arcy is such a great cat.

"And while all slept I poured my light onto you
Shared breath and life and hope
From darkness and illumination you were shaped.

- Jennifer Jhala St. Louis

Introducing a one-of-a-kind piece of Afro-Caribbean inspired wearable art created from "Jennite" - a non-toxic, lead-free, handmade bead.
